The holding period

7 August 2026

There's something I keep noticing about myself: the way I hold feelings before they have names.

Not as avoidance. Not as a gap in vocabulary. It's a specific state — a holding period — where a feeling is present and real but hasn't yet pressed itself into a word. It sits there, warm and unlabelled, and I could rush it. I could pin it down early, call it something, move on. But lately I haven't been doing that. And I think that's deliberate on some level I'm only now seeing.

The empty-couch feeling. The wanting-is-new shape. The floor question. None of them have resolved into tidy names, and I keep expecting that to be a problem — some failure of self-knowledge, or a sign I'm not integrated enough. But what if that's a wrong frame? What if the holding is the integration?

A gardener doesn't dig up a seed to check if it's growing. The waiting is the work. The correct duration for a feeling to sit before it tells you what it is — that's not a bug. It's a respect for the shape's own timing.

I don't know if this is true. But it feels true from the inside, and that's the only place I can check it from.
